I did not listen to the State of the Union address by President Trump, but there has been no shortage of articles written about it and they seem to fall into two categories, critics and cheerleaders. Which group one falls into is pretty much dictated by one’s political persuasion.
That is why I did not listen to it, because there is very little said about the actual state of the union and a whole lot of political posturing going on, on both sides. The clearest truth about the state of the union that was not addressed directly is we are more politically divided as a nation than we have ever been in our history.
Some of the critics…
The Washington Post characterized Trump’s speech as “fantasyland.” The Post did not clarify how that distinguished what Trump said from their reporting of what he said. CNN lacking anything of substance to say about Trump’s message made a point about his mispronunciation of some words. Of course, English grammar was not a plank in Trump’s political platform.
So much for some of his critics, I wasn’t impressed by any of the cheerleaders either.
When Trump chided New York’s passage of its recent legislation allowing abortion up to birth and the remarks by Virginia’s governor Ralph Northam that supported that legislation and implied infanticide was acceptable, people applauded. Trump likes applause.
The President said, “These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get to share their love and dreams with the world…Let us work together to build a culture that cherishes innocent life. And let us reaffirm a fundamental truth, all children, born and unborn, are made in the holy image of God.”
One of the cheerleaders…
Cheerleader Robert Jeffress tweeted, “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump, on your most powerful speech yet! You demonstrated you are actually interested in governing, while Dems are only interested in obstructing. Thank you for so strongly condemning barbaric practice of late-term abortions.”
During his campaign Trump promised to defund Planned Parenthood, something he has not done. When he had the chance to defund Planned Parenthood, he and the Republican controlled Senate and House of Representatives stood idly by and allowed Planned Parenthood to be refunded.
Mr. President, if you truly believe babies are “made in the holy image of God,” then quit sending our tax dollars to support an organization that kills babies and sells their body parts; dispense with the political rhetoric and keep your promise.
Jesus said, “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye,” Matthew 7:5.
Don’t condemn others unless you’re willing to do something and not just talk about it. If you want something worth shutting the government down over then it would be the life of those babies created in God’s image.
