I read a recent article titled “Should scientists artificially cool the planet to stave off climate catastrophe?” It seems those who believe global warming is a threat to civilization think it is time to take matters into their own hands and do something about global warming.
Does anyone remember that in the early 1970s there was “almost unanimous” agreement among the scientific community that global cooling indicated the earth was entering a new ice age that would reduce food production on a grand scale, causing widespread starvation, resulting in a decreased human population on the earth of 75% to 80%? Now the threat is global warming.
Scientific history of global temperatures clearly shows the earth goes through periods of cooling and warming. I have read reports that as recent as a thousand years ago the mean global temperature was warmer than it is today, and civilization was not destroyed.
I do not think global climate change is a threat to civilization; the biggest threat to civilization is Congress and those Chicken Little scientists that advise them.
It has been said that bad weather reminds mankind that we really are not in control of everything. I think it is arrogant for scientists to think they can or need to address global warming by artificial cooling of the planet for two reasons.
First, I do not believe humanity is capable of such a feat on the global scale needed. We have learned to cool our homes during the summer with air conditioning, but it will take a lot more to cool the whole planet. More, I think, than mankind can muster.
Second, it is arrogant to think we can do a better job of controlling the global climate than the natural order created by God. Typically, when we try to “fix” nature we only mess things up. That does not stop us from trying, but it is better when we flow and work with nature instead of fighting it.
There was a global event many years ago that almost entirely wiped-out human civilization; it was simply called the flood. When the waters receded and Noah and his family disembarked from the ark, God promised to never again destroy every living thing as He had done, and said, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease,” Genesis 8:22.
Well, the earth still “remains” and there have been periods of “cold and heat” just as He said. But I also believe what God inspired Peter to write, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up,” 2 Peter 3:10.
It looks like global warming is going to get us in the end.
