The Deseret News/HarrisX conducted a poll recently of Republican voters nationwide. The poll revealed that they see former president Donald Trump as a person of faith more than any of the other Republican presidential candidates.
The poll surveyed 1002 registered voters. Fifty-three percent think Trump is a man of faith all the rest lagged behind. The closest to him was Mike Pence with 52%.
I found the poll disturbing, here’s why.
Trump was pro-choice before running for president in 2016. He became pro-life when he decided to run on the Republican ticket. Being pro-life is not just a political position, it is a deeply held conviction of the dignity and life in the womb.
Trump claimed to be a presbyterian. When he was asked about his church attendance he said he went to church when he could. You would think that one of the richest men in the world could clear his calendar on Sunday, but maybe not.
Trump was thrice married and according to his own words he cheated on every one of his wives. When he was asked if he thought adultery was a sin he said he did not think adultery was a good thing but it wasn’t a sin. He evidently did not read a Bible.
People have accused Trump of being a racist, he’s not. He is something much worse, he is a narcissist. If you like him, he likes you, if you do not like him, he does not like you. He verbally puts down anyone who disagrees with him no matter who it is.
I am not aware of a single Christian characteristic he possesses. He may have people fooled into thinking he is a Christian but he is not. Evidently being religious is not the same as being a Christian, but how anyone could see him as being more religious and a man of faith than any of the other Republican candidates for the Republican nomination is beyond me.
Trump may be many things, but a man of the Christian faith he is not.
