Artificial Intelligence, commonly called AI is in the news almost every day. It is accepted as a great technological advance that promises to revolutionize computer capabilities and make machines more efficient and error free. So, what is AI exactly?
“At its core, artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer or machine to learn from its environment and make decisions based on the data it collects. AI systems are designed to be able to process large amounts of data quickly and accurately, allowing them to make decisions faster than humans can.”
What AI does is to make machines and computers that can think like humans and act like humans. One of the big concerns here is what about ethics, that is, what kind of morality will shape the use of Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is already used in self-driving cars and games like chess where you are playing a computer. These are just a couple of the applications used by AI now. AI promises to change things in business, industry and advertising just to name a few of its possible applications. The biggest concern about AI, as I have already mentioned, is what sort of ethics will guide its implementation?
AI represents a leap in technology and like all technology it is capable of being harnessed for good or evil purposes. As with any new technology there are many speculations as to what it means for the human race. One that has already surfaced is the idea that AI could make the human race extinct.
I want to address this idea that AI can bring about the end of the human race. When we speak of the end of the human race people seem to be quick to say how they think life as we know it will end. When I was in grade school there was the concern we might destroy ourselves in a nuclear war with Russia.
I am a firm believer in the Scriptures and they have already declared how the end of time will happen. “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up,” 2 Peter 3:10.
The end of this age will not come about by human invention or human hands. When the end of time comes it will be by a supernatural act of God. So, I do not worry about human doomsday claims. My trust is in God who holds human history in His hands.
